I have several wonderful and talented artists that I work with on a regular basis. Some are clients, some are friends, and others I have managed to just blissfully stumble across. I have sent 5 questions to various artists for a form of “virtual interview”. Announcing our Aug/September Featured Artist of the Month:
LEWAINE PUBLISHING (LP): What is your “key project”? How long have you been working on it? Synopsis?
MATT: My main project right now is Mythica. Mythica is a comic book that I started brainstorming about 10 years ago and have been consistently working on for the past 3 years. I partnered with writer William Tooker, and we have just completed our third issue.
Mythica follows the journey of an eclectic group of strangers, who find themselves facing a demonic invasion during WWI. At the heart of the story is how these individuals, who have never met, come together, become a family, and face incredible odds to save mankind.
The story begins with a young Belgian girl named Kimberly Bradshaw. As her country is being invaded, and her fiancee volunteers for the Red Cross, she finds herself dreaming of a golden-haired, Scottish warrior; Magnus MacDraken. In Kim’s dreams, Magnus and his Black Watch team find themselves facing terrible nightmarish creatures, and her dreams become too close to reality when people in her small town of Jabekke, are found mysteriously, and gruesomely murdered.
Magnus MacDraken, is the captain of the Scottish Black Watch regiment. In sneaking behind enemy lines, Captain MacDraken, and his crew come across a demonic beast. Magnus is finally able to slay the beast, but not before his entire crew is slaughtered. Distraught and alone, Magnus is left wondering why he survived unscathed; as if on cue an angelic being appears to answer Magnus’ questions.
Little is known about Soradees other than he is seen in Kimberly’s dreams, coming to Magnus, and telling him that he is the key to stopping the demonic invasion. Soradees presents Magnus with a vision of a possible future, should he refuse the call.
Riley Scott, the feisty, red-headed, Irish, MI6 agent is on a mission to find a genealogist named Gerbstadt, who is believed to have been captured by the Germans. Working with her partner, Rutherford, they find themselves in a Transylvanian castle, and discover an evil much more threatening than Germans.
LP: What is your favorite medium to work in? What is your best creation with that medium?
MATT: I think my favorite medium to work in, is just good old-fashioned pencil and paper. All the art I make starts with pencil – pick your favorite, and that’s my best work.
LP: What are your hobbies?
MATT: I used to have a lot of hobbies like; snow boarding, and white-water rafting, but since starting my own comic, and business, I don’t have time for much else. However, when given the opportunity I do enjoy drinks with good friends.
LP: To what do you contribute your success thus far?
MATT: Hard work, dedication, staying up long nights to finish projects instead of going out. Creating any kind of project takes a lot of hard work, and sacrifice, but I believe it will pay off. I love what I do, or I wouldn’t be doing it. I contribute my success so far to all those who have supported my work and have enjoyed my work as fans. You guys are the best! Without those who enjoy my work, there would be no work. Also, I would like to acknowledge all the teachers in my life. They have made a massive impact on I grow as an artist.
LP: What are the three most valuable lessons/tips you have learned about being an artist, so far?
MATT: 1. Do it because you love it. If you go into comics with the intent of making lots of money, you may be in for a long wait.
2. Treat practicing art the same way a professional athlete trains. Most great artists take decades to get good.
3. Take time to do other things. Inspiration comes from all kinds of places.
Matt, Thank you for taking time out of your busy life to answer some questions for us. I have enjoyed watching the growth of Mythica over the past few years of working with you and look forward to the continuation of the story.
I am also excited to share the news of a MYTHICA KICKSTARTER! If you like what you read so far, go check out more over at Kickstarter and support an indie artist!
